Asmat tribe live in a region on the southwestern coast of Papua, bordering the Arafura Sea, with lands totaling approximately 18,000 square km and consisting of mangrove, tidal swamp, freshwater swamp, and lowland rainforest. The land of Asmat is located both within and adjacent to Lorentz National Park and World Heritage Site, the largest protected area in the Asia-Pacific region. The Asmat people have one of the most well-known woodcarving traditions in the Pacific, and their art is sought by collectors worldwide.
DAY 1 : ARRIVAL – TIMIKA (D)
Transfer to the airport in Bali for the flight to Timika. On arrival at airport in Timika, transfer to the hotel for overnight stay.
DAY 2 : TIMIKA – EWER (B, L, D)
Depart by a pioneer flight to Ewer airstrip. On arrival at Ewer, visit Sjuru Village, Asmat Museums and surroundings. Overnight at a simple accommodation.
DAY 3 : EWER – ATSJI – AMBISU (B, L, D)
After breakfast, observe the traditional life and traditional performance of the Asmat Tribe along Atsji and Ambisu.
DAY 04 : KAWET SAGOO PARTY (B, L, D)
After breakfast, visit a sagoo party. Sagoo is the main foodstaple among the Asmat people. They take the starch from a big sagoo using wooden axe and crush it in the water. The process to make a pure sagoo can be about one day. The local people also take the sagoo worm as the supplement fot the sagoo. You will have a chance to taste the local people’s food. Overnight at a local house in Kawet.
DAY 05 : KAWET – JOW (B, L, D)
After breakfast at the local house, depart to Jow by motorized wooden canoe. Just like most of the other Asmat tribe villages, Jow village is also located on the river. All buildings, even road, are made of woods with the height of about 1m or more from the ground.
DAY 06 : JOW – MBIS POLE CEREMONY (B,L,D)
After breakfast, visit Mbis Pole ceremony. This ceremony is among the most important ceremony for the Asmat people. According to the local, the Mbis Pole is considerd to have such supranatural power to protect their village. The pole is a nice sclupture made of wood and usually named after an important passed-away people. The Asmat tribe ceremony usually accompanied by cano racing and collosal dance.
DAY 07 : JOW – BIWAR LAUT (B, L, D)
After breakfast visit Biwar Laut by a motorized canoe. Biwar Laut is a small village close to the ocean. Most of the local people make a living from the fishery.
DAY 8 : BIWAR LAUT – AGATS (B,L,D)
After breakfast, make the last day trip by the wooden boat to Agats. Overnight at simple accommodation.
DAY 9 : AGATS – EWER – FLY TIMIKA (B,L,D)
Transfer by boat to Ewer Airstrip for the pioneer flight back to Timika. Overnight at hotel in Timika.
DAY 10 : TIMIKA – JAKARTA/BALI (B)
After breakfast, free program until the time for transfer to the airport for the flight back to Bali. Pick up at airport in Bali and hotel transfer.
