Penetaran Dalem Ped Temple which is also called Pura Penataran Agung Ped is located near the beach at Ped, 3.5 km east of Toyapakeh, Nusa Penida Island. It houses a shrine for the Jero Gede Macaling that is a source of power for practitioners of black magic, and a place of pilgrimage for those seeking protection from sickness and evil.
Nusa Penida is an island a few minutes away from the mainland of Bali. The temple is located on the south side of the beach. The temple is one of several attractions of Nusa Penida. The others are Toya Pakeh Beach, Crystal Bay, Jungut Batu and Manta Point with its underwater beauty.
The Penetaran Dalem Ped Temple is visited by Hindus to ask for salvation, away from disaster, prosperity and tranquility. The Hindu Balinese who come to this temple for worship often go the other temples on the island of Penida as well such as Giri Putri Cave Temple, Peak Medawu, Puncak Mundi, Dalem Kerangkeng, Mastulan and several others.
There are things to remember, some among others are: if visitors pray to the temple, they are not allowed to pee standing around the temple area, they should not use flower buds near the temple, they should not sing “janger” songs.
Today at least there are 3 big cruise providers such as Bali Hai, Quicksilver and Bounty that bring tourists and enjoy cruise from Bali mainland to the island of Nusa Penida. It takes around 45 minutes to get to Penida Island from Sanur port by fast boat. Visitors can also take fast boat from Pesinggahan Beach or Padangbai harbour in eastern Bali. The distance of the temple is about 50 meters from the coastline of Nusa Penida. If you come via Buyuk port, it takes about 5 – 10 minutes to travel by car or motorbike.
